Mostafa Mohamed Refuses to Play in LGBTQ+ Campaign Match, Faces Heavy Fine from Nantes

By Fakorede King Abdulmajeed | Fuxma Media | May 17, 2025

Egyptian forward Mostafa Mohamed is once again at the center of controversy after declining to play for FC Nantes during their recent Ligue 1 fixture, which featured a league-wide campaign in support of LGBTQ+ inclusion. The club has announced that he will be heavily fined, with the proceeds going to charity.

This isn’t the first time Mohamed has taken a stand on this issue. The 26-year-old also refused to participate in a similar campaign last season, citing personal and religious beliefs. That stance drew mixed reactions, from praise in conservative circles to criticism from equality advocates.

Ahead of Nantes’ matchday clash this past weekend, players across Ligue 1 were expected to don rainbow-themed kits and armbands as part of a French football federation initiative to promote inclusion and fight homophobia.

Mohamed informed club officials he would not participate. He made himself unavailable for selection, maintaining that his decision was based on his convictions and not an act of hate or discrimination.

In response, FC Nantes confirmed via L’Équipe that Mohamed will be sanctioned. The fine is said to be “substantial,” and the club has taken the additional step of directing the money to charitable causes.

Mohamed’s stance opens up a wider debate. Is this a case of a player defying club obligations, or one standing firm in his personal and religious identity?

A practising Muslim, Mohamed has always maintained that his objection is not rooted in animosity. Last season, he said:

“I respect all people, regardless of their preferences. But I must stay true to my beliefs.”

Still, his decisions have not come without consequences. Though Nantes has attempted to manage the situation delicately, the French league is under pressure to enforce its inclusive values across all levels of the game.

Several other players across France, including Moroccan international Zakaria Aboukhlal, also reportedly opted out of similar campaigns last season. Their choices underscore the tension between globalized sports values and deeply personal belief systems.

What’s Next for Mohamed?

It remains to be seen how this will affect his future at Nantes. He’s been a key part of the squad, scoring 8 goals this season in all competitions. But controversies like this can strain relationships within a club, especially if it’s seen as disrupting unity.

More importantly, Mohamed’s case could influence how clubs and leagues handle these scenarios moving forward. Will they enforce mandatory participation, or allow room for personal convictions?

Final Whistle

Mostafa Mohamed’s actions have once again sparked a conversation that goes far beyond football. It’s a reminder that while the game is a unifying force, it also reflects the complexities of identity, belief, and inclusion in our world today.
