Okocha Slams Carragher: 'You Wouldn’t Want Your Son to Play Like Him'

Nigerian football icon and former national team captain Austine Okocha has strongly criticized Jamie Carragher for his remarks on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), calling them disrespectful and dismissive of African football.

Carragher has come under heavy scrutiny for downplaying the significance of AFCON while discussing Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the world’s best player award. His comments have sparked backlash from past and present African footballers, with Okocha among those weighing in.

The former Bolton Wanderers playmaker suggested that Carragher’s opinions did not warrant serious attention, pointing to the ex-Liverpool defender’s own playing career as a reason why he might not fully appreciate African football.

“There are certain players whose opinions you simply overlook,” Okocha said. “When you consider their careers and the type of football they played, it makes sense. You wouldn’t want your son to play like Carragher. He can never truly appreciate African football or the immense talent the continent produces.”
