Iwobi Silenced: Fulham Clamp Down on Snapchat Behind-the-Scenes

By Fakorede King Abdulmajeed | Fuxma Media | July 25, 2025

Alex Iwobi has always worn his personality on his sleeve. Whether it's on the pitch with his tireless work rate or off it with his animated social media presence, the Nigerian midfielder has built a connection with fans that feels genuine. But at Fulham Football Club, that openness has now been reined in.

In a series of posts on Snapchat, Iwobi revealed that the club’s media team had told him to stop sharing behind-the-scenes content. The reason? His clips were showing “too much” and he was warned that continuing could result in a fine.

“For those that are wondering why I haven’t been snapping BTS… one person in the media team has been saying I haven’t been catching the right stuff,” he said. “They also said I might get fined if I continue… That’s why I ain’t been snapping BTS. I know you guys enjoy seeing what my teammates are like behind the scenes. But I have to respect the rules.”

His posts had become a staple for fans, especially those eager to see a side of football often kept private. Iwobi had carved out a niche through Snapchat, showing moments with teammates like Adama Traoré and Calvin Bassey,  banter in the dressing room, jokes on the training ground, and the light moments that bring a squad together.

But one particular post reportedly raised concerns inside the club. According to reports by talkSPORT and GOAL, Iwobi had hinted at captain Tom Cairney’s contract renewal before Fulham had made an official announcement. Even though the post was brief and not explicit, it crossed a line in the eyes of the club’s communications team.

There was no outburst from Iwobi, no complaints. Just honesty. He told fans the truth that he’d been told to stop, and that he was choosing to respect the rules. But that honesty also exposed a growing reality in modern football: players may have platforms, but clubs still hold the controls.

Fulham has not released a public statement on the issue. Internally, the decision is said to align with broader efforts to manage content and preserve the professionalism of official club announcements. But for fans, it felt like something personal had been taken away. Iwobi’s snaps were more than content, they were windows into the soul of the squad.

The Bigger Picture

In recent years, footballers have become more than athletes. They’re storytellers, influencers, role models, and media brands in their own right. Social media has allowed players to speak directly to their supporters, bypassing the traditional press, and offering unfiltered glimpses into their lives. That visibility builds loyalty. It breaks down barriers.

But with every glimpse, clubs become more cautious. The stakes are higher. Media rights are tightly packaged. Press officers are constantly assessing risk. And players, even the most sincere ones, are reminded that their access even to their own dressing room is not always theirs to control.

For Iwobi, the silence isn’t just about Snapchat. It’s a reflection of how modern football works, a world where image is managed, spontaneity is monitored, and the boundaries between the personal and the professional are shrinking.

He hasn't stopped smiling. He hasn’t stopped working. But the voice that brought fans closer to the heart of Fulham’s squad has, for now, been quieted.
