The Governors of the 19 Northern states, through the Northern States Governors' Forum, have expressed their support for the establishment of state police.

This position was included in a communique released after their joint meeting on Saturday at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.

The governors agreed on the necessity of state police, emphasizing that decentralizing security management would help tackle the region's security challenges more effectively.

The communique also urged the National Assembly to act swiftly in passing the legal framework needed for the establishment of state police.

“We reaffirm our support for the creation of state police and urge the National Assembly to take prompt action in finalizing the legal framework for its implementation,” stated Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Gombe State.

The region has faced numerous security issues, such as banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping, and the governors recognized the importance of bipartisan cooperation and collaborative efforts in addressing these concerns.

“Following in-depth discussions on regional matters, especially security, the Forum issued the following resolutions,” Yahaya said.

The communique further stressed the need for collective efforts to tackle the region’s security issues.

The governors also called for:

The establishment of inter-state platforms to enhance border surveillance.

Increased support for federal security forces and strengthening local initiatives to address security challenges.

Additionally, they praised President Bola Tinubu for his continued efforts to improve security and infrastructure in Northern Nigeria.

“The Forum appreciates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering dedication to addressing security and infrastructural challenges in the Northern region,” the communique concluded.
