Pope Francis Discharged from Hospital After Five-Week Stay, Set for Two-Month Recovery

Pope Francis was discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital today after a five-week stay due to pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted in mid-February, waved from a hospital window before his departure, acknowledging well-wishers who had gathered outside. His release marks the beginning of a prolonged recovery period, with Vatican officials confirming that he will spend "at least two months" recuperating at his residence.

Francis’ hospitalisation had raised concerns about his health, given his history of respiratory issues and previous hospital stays. However, doctors reassured the public that he responded well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Despite his illness, the Pope remained actively engaged in Vatican affairs from his hospital bed, continuing to oversee Church matters and delivering brief messages of encouragement to followers.

Throughout his hospitalisation, an outpouring of support came from around the world. Leaders, religious figures, and the faithful sent messages of prayers and solidarity. The Pope’s resilience has been widely praised, with many commending his commitment to his duties even during illness.

Now back at the Vatican, Francis is expected to follow a reduced schedule while focusing on his recovery. Vatican officials have hinted that his public appearances will be limited in the coming weeks, with senior cardinals stepping in for some of his responsibilities. However, the Pope remains determined to resume his full duties once he regains his strength.

As he settles back into the Vatican, the world will be watching to see how his health progresses and whether his recovery period will impact upcoming Church events and engagements. For now, the Pope’s safe return is a moment of relief for Catholics worldwide, who continue to pray for his well-being.
