Lamine Yamal Breaks Another Record – Barcelona’s Next Superstar?

By Fakorede King Abdulmajeed | SportsX Gazette | February 8, 2025

Lamine Yamal continues to shatter records and expectations. The 16-year-old Barcelona winger once again made headlines with a stunning solo effort against Alavés, dribbling past six defenders—something not seen at the club since Lionel Messi’s legendary run in 2007. It was a moment of brilliance that left fans and analysts drawing inevitable comparisons between the two.

The teenager has been a revelation this season, becoming the best dribbler in La Liga with 72 successful take-ons from 140 attempts. His ability to glide past defenders with ease has given Barcelona a much-needed attacking edge in a season where they have struggled for consistency. When Yamal is on the pitch, Barcelona’s win percentage stands at 67%, but in games where he has been absent or started on the bench, that number drops to just 45%.

Manager Xavi Hernández has not held back in his praise for the youngster. "Lamine plays with maturity beyond his years. His vision, confidence, and technical ability are rare, even among experienced professionals. He is a special talent," the Barcelona coach said after the match.

Yamal’s influence is not limited to domestic football. He has been named Man of the Match five times in La Liga, played a crucial role in Barcelona’s Champions League campaign, and is now being considered for La Liga’s Player of the Season award. His performances have also earned him nominations for the FIFA The Best World XI, the Kopa Trophy, and the Golden Boy award—a remarkable feat for someone who only turned 16 last July.

The club has moved swiftly to secure his future, tying him down to a contract that runs until 2030, with a €1 billion release clause—ensuring Europe’s top clubs will have to wait if they dream of luring him away from Catalonia.

Despite the hype, Yamal remains focused. In a recent interview, he dismissed comparisons with Messi, saying, "I just want to help the team and keep improving. There is still a long way to go."

With Barcelona still in contention for silverware, Yamal is set to play a defining role in their season. If his current trajectory continues, it’s only a matter of time before he establishes himself as one of the best players in world football.

For now, fans can simply enjoy the rise of a prodigy who seems destined for greatness.
